Safeguarding Board

The safety of children and young people in Wakefield is the most important thing to us.

To help us know how safe our children and young people really are, we have a Safeguarding Board. This is a group of senior managers from every agency (such as police, education, social care, youth service, NHS) that meets regularly to talk about safeguarding, and to make plans.

You might be interested to hear that the board is starting to look at setting up a children and young people's group, this will be an important way of finding out what our children's concerns around safety are in Wakefield.

At the moment, a lot of our written information is aimed at adults, but we are looking at getting more children engaged to work with the decision makers of the board, after all as our slogan says..

"Safeguarding is everybody's business", and children's voices are certainly part of that.

Why a Children in Care Council?
Children in care councils (known as CICC's) are an important opportunity for children and young people in care & care leavers to have their say about the care system and discuss any issues. The government asked that all Local Authorities set up CICC's, they all run quite differently, but the central idea is that they are run by young people that have experienced life in care. By sharing their experiences they can help social workers, managers and other professionals deliver services and make sure the lives of looked after children improve. The CICC helps to challenge negative perceptions of looked after children and champion's children's rights. Read more about Wakefield CICC
